Halloween might be over but the spook is always on
Top 4 Anime Series if you're into the creepy vibes.
#4 Mieruko Chan
I’ve chosen Mieruko Chan, an adaptation of the horror manga series that also goes by the same name as my 4th pick to start this list. Miko Yotsuya, the protagonist, is a high school student, and watching late-night horror shows is the extent of ‘creepy’ in her life. However, this changes when she starts having experiences that make her extremely dissimilar to other people, caused by her supernatural ability to see monsters walking among humans which are invisible to everyone else. She tries not to pay attention to their presence but this becomes difficult when she sees how they affect those around her, especially her cheerful best friend, Hana Yurikawa. This show offers a perfect balance between spooky and silly which makes it a great option to go for if you’re looking for something light-hearted to enjoy with your loved ones.
#3 Higurashi When They Cry
Higurashi When They Cry was adapted from a visual novel series by Ryukishi07 and produced by Frontier Works, Geneon Entertainment, and Sotsu. It comprises three seasons, two side stories, and a few specials with its overall plot focusing on five friends trying to figure out why curious murder cases have been spiralling their village for the last three years. They successfully manage to establish connections between the recent murders and an annual festival that is enthusiastically celebrated by all villagers. This anime is one of my Halloween favorites as it takes you on an eerie ride of madness and thrill. I can easily guarantee that the creepy scenes will make it hard for you not to cover your eyes every once in a while.
#2 Shiki
This 22-episode long series is yet another anime to make it to this list which has been inspired by a horror novel. This list would have been incomplete if I had chosen not to bring any vampire action into it. This story follows a fated to die young girl by the name of Megumi Shimizu whose dream to live a charming life in a big city is overturned by her tragic and unexpected death at a village called Sotoba. This gives rise to a terror-filled epidemic and leads to bloodthirsty vampires multiplying at a horrifying rate. To stop this gigantic threat from destroying the livelihood of the Sotoba village, an introverted youth, known as Natsuno Yuuki, and Toshi, a skilled doctor join hands. This series is ranked #2 in this list because of the depth it contains and the terrifying picture of survival it paints about a reality where it is difficult to discern between good and evil, and of course, its creepy animation and four different pieces of theme music are credible enough for you to already add it to your watchlist this spooktacular season.
#1 Another
Produced by P.A.Works and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, Another is a horror anime series comprising a total of 12 episodes. Having a movie feel to it and more than enough blood to send shivers down your spine, it is just the perfect pick for classic horror anime enthusiasts. The whole series is based on a 2009 novel of the same name and deals with a young boy named Kōichi Sakakibara as its inquisitive protagonist who, soon after transferring into Yomiyama Middle school meets a mysterious eye-patched girl. Known by everyone as Mei Misaki, this girl has supernatural abilities with the help of which Kōichi solves the puzzles behind his peers’ unexplainable, gruesome deaths. Brace yourself this Halloween season, because ‘Another’ without a doubt is an anime that will rush your adrenaline in the most brutal ways possible.
